3RD PAN-GASS Meeting Understanding and Modelling Atmospheric Processes – July 25 – 29, 2022, Monterey, USA

The GEWEX Global Atmospheric System Studies Panel (GASS) will hold its 3rd Pan-GASS Meeting, Understanding and Modeling Atmospheric Processes (UMAP 2022) at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Monterey, CA, USA, from 25-29 July 2022.

UMAP 2022 aims to bring together weather and climate scientists, including both observationalists and modelers, to discuss the key issues of atmospheric science. The program will include all aspects and methods of model development from deterministic numerics to stochastic forcing; process modeling to parametrization; observational constraints to diagnostic techniques; and idealized modeling to operational forecasting and climate predictions. The purpose of the conference is to discuss progress in understanding atmospheric processes and representing them in models, to coordinate current initiatives and make plans for the future.

UMAP 2022 is an in-person meeting. If an in-person meeting is not recommended due to circumstances, UMAP2022 will be postponed to a later date.

For mor Information visit the meeting website.

Call for Abstracts

UMAP 2022 is articulated around four main themes, outlined below. For each of these themes, we are calling for studies relying on process-oriented diagnostics, modeling, and new observational data, applied to enhance our understanding and modeling capabilities of atmospheric processes and their coupling with the surface. The four main themes are:

  • Organization of shallow and deep convection
  • Surface-atmosphere interactions and the boundary layer
  • Cloud systems and associated processes (microphysics, physics, dynamics, radiation)
  • Towards global km-scale modeling and Digital Twins of the Earth System

Proposals for potential new community projects are particularly welcomed, including proposing a topic and possible approaches OR proposing specific activities in greater detail.

Detailed information about the Call for Abstracts can be found in Themes and Sessions.

The new assessment report by the SPARC S-RIP activity is finaly published and available

In a comprehensive review, the SPARC S-RIP activity has conducted a coordinated intercomparison of reanalysis data sets with respect to key diagnostics. The results can be used to provide guidance on the appropriate use of reanalysis products in scientific studies of relevance to SPARC and beyond.

SPARC Reanalysis Intercomparison Project (S-RIP) Final Report can be found here (SPARC Report No. 10).

2nd Climate Observation Conference pushed forward to 17 – 19 October 2022, Darmstadt, Germany

The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) supported by EUMETSAT will be holding a conference to assess how the current global climate observing system can be improved to better support current and near-term user needs for climate information. This conference follows on from the first climate observation conference, Global Climate Observation: The Road to The Future held on 2–4 March 2016 in Amsterdam.

The conference will take into account the GCOS Status Report 2021 as well as the GCOS Implementation Plan 2022 (in preparation), which will make recommendations to meteorological networks, ocean and land major observing systems and satellite agencies and will be presented to the UNFCCC in 2022.

A scientific committee is being setup under the leadership of Prof. Sabrina Speich, and an invitation for abstracts will be issued in March 2022.

Please mark your calendars now for this important conference from 17 to 19 October 2022. We hope that in spite of COVID-19 pandemic the meeting will be held in person, but hybrid options will be considered too. The registration page for the conference will open in March 2022 and more detail on the programme will be available at that time. All information will be made available at our meeting website: https://www.eventsforce.net/gcos-coc

Please also feel free to pass this announcement on to colleagues and contacts who would also be interested in participating.

In the meantime, if you have any questions related to the conference, do not hesitate to contact us via email: .

We are looking forward to welcoming you in Darmstadt in October!

The Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) Survey

The WCRP Working Group on Coupled Modelling (WGCM) and the CMIP Panel are already working hard in preparation for the next phase of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP). Specifically, we need to hear from everyone their views on the positive aspects and challenges they faced in CMIP6, and how they would like to see future phases of CMIP structured and delivered.

For that, we are inviting the community to take part in the “CMIP Community next steps survey”.  It is your chance to help us shape the future of CMIP!

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/VHK8FJQ

Deadline for completing the survey: 28th February 2022

We strongly encourage you to share this survey as broadly as you can. We are in particular very keen to have responses from users of the data, from the academic and policy-making world.

For more Information please visit the WCRP website. If you have any questions, please get in touch with Nico Caltabiano () in the WCRP Secretariat.

Thanks for helping us in making CMIP better!
